Introduction

In 2014, when the University of Groningen celebrates its 400th anniversary, this meeting addresses how infants explore and discover the world. During the last decade it became increasingly clear that motor, sensory and cognitive development are strongly interrelated. This is not only true for preschool age and school age, it holds true also for infancy. For instance, cognitive drive facilitates the exploration of motor possibilities and the resulting motor behaviour generates sensory and cognitive information. Gradually, understanding of the complex neural circuitries underlying the interrelated development has improved; the circuitries include the cerebellum and the striatum and prefrontal cortex. Likewise, an increase in knowledge occurred on the mechanisms involved in atypical infant development, which may or may not result in the development of conditions such as cerebral palsy,  Developmental Coordination Disorder, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Themes addressed at the ‘Inspiring Infancy’ Meeting are ‘Organization and reorganization of sensory and motor cortices’, ‘Typical development of sensory, motor and cognitive functions’, ‘Neural circuitries and sensory, motor and cognitive development’ and, last but not least, ‘Interrelations between motor and cognitive development: consequences for early intervention’..

The congress will be a meeting place of scientists involved in fundamental aspects of brain development and scientists and clinicians dealing with infants and children with minor and major developmental disorders. Ample time will be devoted to general discussions. Participants are encouraged to bring posters with their latest results.
